The ATRA Tour Continues....ATRA News does not
The addition of social network sites such as Facebook and Twitter to the already crowded and information packed world wide web means news from the world of amusement parks and thrill rides arrives almost before the parks themselves know. Due to this, we've decided to end the ATRA News emails in 2015.
Thank you for your support over the years. We have experienced many headlines together, both good and bad. Please continue to support the ATRA website with your photos and trip reports.

ZDT Amusement Park Adding Switchback! In 2015!
Switchback! Inspired by the first roller coaster in America, Switchback Railway at Coney Island, ZDT's Switchback will be the only wooden shuttle coaster in the world! Designed by Gravity Group, this EXTREME family... coaster will take a 64 ft over-hill initial drop, provide multiple airtime moments, a 104 degree over-banked turn, fly through a building, and travel up a 65 ft spire, only to descend and run the whole track again in reverse! This will not only be the first modern wooden shuttle coaster, but also the first shuttle coaster that doesn't sacrifice the traditional lift hill and drop by employing a track-switch at the bottom of the first hill to take you back to the train station when the ride has been completed!

Kings Island Installing New Flying Scooters, Kiddie Ride And Food Upgrades For 2015!
Two new family rides, the largest Starbucks store in the Tri-State, and other improvements are all part of Kings Island's plan for next summer. The first of the new rides is Woodstock Gliders, a classic flying scooters ride from Larson International. The ride features eight two-person planes that glide 28 feet above the ground. As the planes begin to rotate, they will fan out over a large area. Each plane has a stationary rear wing and a moveable front wing which allows the guest to control the flight and alter their ride experience from mild to wild. Woodstock Gliders is similar to the Flying Eagles, a popular former Kings Island ride that entertained more than 12 million guests during its 32 years of operation from 1972 to 2004. The second new ride is Snoopy's Space Buggies from Zamperla, an attraction designed for children of all ages to enjoy with their parents or grandparents. Six four-seat vehicles will bounce up and down while rotating in a circle. The new rides will be located next to each other in the 14-time, award-winning Planet Snoopy kids' area of the park.

Alabama Splash Adventure Restores Rampage Roller Coaster!
Members of the American Coaster Enthusiasts had the first chance to ride the newly restored Rampage roller coaster Saturday at Alabama Splash Adventure. The park was closed during the private event, but the general public will have the opportunity to ride the 3,5000-foot-long wooden roller coaster when the park's season begins in May. The Rampage was originally built in 1998. Reaching a height of 120 feet and a top speed of 56 miles per hour, Rampage was a fixture at the park's previous incarnation, Visionland and later Alabama Adventure. When the park's previous owners decided three years ago to transform the amusement park into a water park only, Rampage was closed down. Over the past six months, the owners of Alabama Splash Adventure have embarked on an extensive restoration project to replace virtually the entire track — including over 1,400 boards and supports — and restore the 28-seat train.

Kentucky Kingdom Adding 5 Attractions In 2015!
When Kentucky Kingdom kicked off its comeback in May after a five-year hiatus, no one knew if the theme park could recapture its status as a Louisville landmark. But Kentucky Kingdom attracted nearly 600,000 visitors and sold 117,000 season passes in 2014 — strong results that led the theme park's owners to expand the schedule and accelerate investment in new rides for next year. The park will add five attractions next year, including three rides mothballed by prior owners — the T3 roller coaster (a refurbished T2); the Raging River Raft Ride; and the Enterprise, a modernized Ferris wheel-shaped ride that flattens as it spins its passengers in gondolas. Also debuting next year are two new rides — a 130-foot-tall SkyCatcher swing and Cyclos pendulum that rotates 360 degrees — that will cost about $1 million with installation.

Mantis To Become Rougarou At Cedar Point!
Cedar Point, The Roller Coaster Capital of the World, will introduce a dynamically new riding experience when it unleashes Rougarou in the spring of 2015. Named after a terrifying werewolf-like creature in French folklore, Rougarou [roo-guh-roo] feeds on screams and lurks in and around the swampy lagoon at the center of the park, shared with other coasters like Iron Dragon and Top Thrill Dragster. Rougarou's floorless trains will take riders on an epic journey at speeds reaching 60 mph as their feet dangle just inches above the track and the murky waters below. The trains will be manufactured by Bolliger & Mabillard, Monthey, Switzerland, the same team behind rides like Raptor and GateKeeper, and will transform the ride experience dramatically while utilizing the structure and track of the former Mantis roller coaster.

Holiday World's Koch Family Branches Out And Buys Alabama's Splash Adventure!
Good news for fans of the former Visionland and later Alabama Adventure amusement park - members of the Koch family, who up until recently ran Holiday World, have purchased the property with apparent plans for opening the amusement rides in the future. As a bit of a surprise, Alabama's Splash Adventure water park - what's currently left operating of the original Visionland - changed their website today to show off Dan and his sister Natalie as part of the newly "family owned & operated" facility. If the plan is to reopen the amusement park, there will be plenty of work required. Looking at a recent aerial shot of the property on Google, it seems that many of the park's former rides have already been ripped out. The two largest, a Boomerang coaster and the wooden Rampage coaster, are still standing however.

That entails moving the route of the train to include a track heading west and a path underneath the Zippin Pippin. Adding a new ride fits the park's master plan, which was updated last year.
